Ruffle bed skirt – Soften the look of your bed with a classic bed skirt, with ruffles. Sometimes called a ruffled or gathered skirt, the style works with casual and formal rooms alike. Store bought versions tend to skimp on fullness and length, and cloth selections are limited. Make your own ruffled skirt bed for a custom fit in the fabric of your choice. Measure the length and width of your bare mattress. Measure from the top of the box spring on the floor to the finished hanging length. Cut material from the opaque linings 1 1/2 inches long and 1 inch wider than the mattress to make a platform for your bed skirt.
Making ruffle bed skirt, sew two widths of the opaque linings together if the bed is wider than the material. Curve the lower corners of the platform to match the corners of the spring box at the foot of the bed. Place the platform fabric right side down. Fold the top edge over 1/2 inch. Bend again to make a double fold. Pin the fold of pins. Machine stitches along the length of the double fold, with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Double the length of the mattress, and then add the width. Multiply the total by 2.5. Cut the full width of the fabric until the combined width is equal to the final total. Cut the pieces 2 1/2 inches longer than the finished hanging length.
Pin the right edge of the first width of the fabric to the left edge of the second width. The pin with the right inside. Continue with the rest of the fabric widths, until you have a long strip of fabric from the ruffle bed skirt. Sew the pieces together with a seam allowance of 1/2 inch. Double fold the short left side of the long 1/2 inch strip, as you did with the platform fabric in Step 3. Pin the cap, and sew it in place with a seam allowance 1 / 4 in. Repeat with the short side to the right. Double fold the bottom of the long strip to make the hem. they make each 1-inch fold. Place the strip face up on your sewing machine. Sew the double fold in place along with a 3/4 inch seam allowance.
